Dear Ana,

This "hello" is coming to you fresh back from the UN's Commission on the Status of Women! I attended multiple sessions every day for a full week, including a large session in the UN itself. Some of the sessions included Integrating Immigrants, Preventing Cyber Violence, and How Women Leaders Should Access the Media. Thank you, Wilda Spalding, for making the Salem Peace Institute Enterprises available to so many women year after year...the experience is life-changing!

So much to digest and process!  I thought I would just share a tidbit....

In a session about leadership and media,  a corporate CEO addressed all of us when she said, "One of the biggest barriers for women leaders is that they try too hard to be perfect!"  (Sound familiar?)  "Go for excellence, not perfection.  Giving a press release? Quote YOURSELF! BE the Expert!"

And more leadership advice:

Ask for help judiciously. Do your homework, research. Come to the table prepared so you can ask good questions. Get prospect names from other women.  Then pay it forward. Get a mentor, then mentor someone. We are in a historic time. Disrupt your life as much as possible so as not to be "comfortable." Speak up and encourage. Make sure you are interacting with multiple generations.

Then, I heard Melissa Cooke Johnson, one of AAUW's national Board of Directors encourage women who are on the fence about running for office. "Come on in," she said. "The water's fine. You'll figure it out!"

Isn't that what we need to tell ourselves instead of holding back? "Jump in...then figure it out!"

Here's one of my favorite quotes from Dawna Markova who encourages us to jump in,  take risks and live our purpose!

“I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom, and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit.” ~ Dawna Markova

Incidentally, for the women on this mailing list, I have a private, feminist facebook group for women who want to empower themselves and each other. Let me know if you would like to join and Ill invite you in! As a result of the UN experience, I'm creating another private facebook group for women who want to encourage and support the brave young women who are speaking out nationally, and becoming targets for cyber bullying and online violence. Again, let me know if you would like to be part of our "Guardian Angel Corps!"

For men on this mailing list, if you are one of those wonderful men who respect and acknowledge women for what they bring to the table as human beings, THANK YOU!

I'm offering a special workshop on April 7 from 9:30 - noon on expanding your networks. If you want to be known for your amazing network, if you want to win favors from others, and if you want an endless list of prospects, join us for an intensive morning. Here's the link to the information. I will teach you how I became "The Connecting Force."

Hope to see you soon!
